Sankofa African Drum and Dance Company, founded in 2007 by artistic director Maria “Djembe Queen” Hall, is Tennessee’s premier African drum and dance company. Based in Nashville, Sankofa delivers immersive workshops, school residencies, and live performances that connect students to traditional West African rhythms, movement, and cultural heritage. The company has performed at cultural festivals, university programs, and international stages, bringing authentic African arts experiences to diverse audiences. Serving Metro Nashville Public Schools and community organizations statewide, Sankofa engages learners of all ages through hands-on djembe instruction, dance, and Community Activating Performances.
Program Overview
Sankofa African Drum and Dance Company offers K–12 school programs including hands-on African Drum and Dance Workshops, Immersive Drum & Dance Experiences, School Assembly Performances, Staff Wellness & Rhythm-Based Team Building, and multi-week Residency Programs — all rooted in cultural education, social-emotional learning, and arts integration.
