Roy Henson is a lifelong resident of TN. He was born and lived in Clay County for most of his life. He was educated in the Clay County Schools. His advanced degrees are B.A. from David Lipscomb, 1964 and M.A. from Memphis State University, 1969. Mr. Henson spent a 33-year career in the public schools of Tennessee, retiring in 2009. He has spent his retirement years presenting programs on Pioneer Toys in schools and at visitor centers in the Great Smoky Mountains.

Program Type: Arts Appreciation
Program Description:
The program involves an intensive hands-on presentation with handmade wood and string toys. These toys are described as to their history and place of origin. A brief power point details cultural applications and how to use the toys. The hands-on part of the program uses stations of displayed toys. This part of the presentation requires 30-45 minutes so children or adults can move from table to table to learn about each toy. Each participant receives a button toy to share with family. The lesson concludes with question and answer with presentation of a few restricted toys such as a bull roarer or pop gun.
