John Warren is a time-based media artist primarily producing experimental nonfiction films and videos. Many of his films are lyrical meditations that seek to question, to interpret, and to express that which transcends language. His award-winning short films have screened in festivals and programs around the world, his feature-length screenplays have won accolades in Hollywood, and his video editing for PBS has been nominated for a Daytime Emmy. John earned an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. He currently teaches film fundamentals & video art at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN.

Program Title: Video Production Workshop

Program Type: Arts Curriculum

Program Description:

Students spend nine weeks learning about filmmaking techniques, processes, language and storytelling. They view and analyze films from nonfiction, narrative, and alternative modes. Students work with digital cameras, lighting, and computer editing software to produce their own short films as well as a collaborative group project. Assignments include written work, visual work, video production, audio production and editing.

Program Title: Narrative Film Workshop

Program Type: Arts Curriculum

Program Description:

This workshop introduces students to the theory and techniques of developing and producing short story ideas that are shot on digital video and edited digitally on a computer. Working in crews, students develop their directing, shooting, and editing skills as they produce short videos (three to five minutes in length). Special emphasis is placed on storytelling through visual language. Work sessions are divided into lecture, lab, and screening periods.

Program Title: Documentary Film Workshop

Program Type: Arts Curriculum

Program Description:

This workshop explores unconventional approaches to the video documentary, focusing on the personal/poetic. Emphasis is on keen observation, avoiding the formulaic, and strategies for working with low budgets and little or no crew. Each student can work alone or collaborate with another student to produce a short video (no more than 10 minutes).
