I am a National Board School Librarian, who writes award-winning picture books for young learners. My book, MEMPHIS, MARTIN, AND THE MOUNTAINTOP was awarded a 2019 Coretta Scott King Honor Medal. Memory is my motivation. I write historical fiction to help students remember pivotal moments in Tennessee History, they are not quick to find in text books. For instance, my MEMPHIS book is a poetic exploration of Dr. King’s final Civil Rights campaign that tragically and triumphantly, ended in Memphis. I believe a new generation of poets and writers will only bloom and flourish, when children are afforded time to read and write, creatively. I organized the literacy program, “Words of Wonder (W.O.W.),” for this purpose. My interactive presentations engage students’ imaginations with readings from my books, as it also provides instruction and time for students to write poetry, independently.

Program Description:
WORDS OF WONDER (WOW) is an interactive literacy program suited for young readers in Pre K – 5th grade. Why interactive? Call and response along with music and movement are three impactful teaching tools. Each 45-minute program holds to a specific theme for the month and includes original book(s) or poems composed by Memphis author, Alice Faye Duncan. To allow students creative freedom and opportunities to exercise their imagination, each presentation will also include a poetry exercise where students will use the “3 Words of Wonder” that are introduced at the beginning of the program.
