Performed by The Stones River Chamber Players at MTSU as part of their new, arts inclusive
community outreach program, entitled Notes & Tales for Kids. The Mousewife is the inaugural
production.
The Mousewife is an interactive composition, incorporating young audience participation in
cooperation with school music teachers. Students will learn the finale song, “Forever Free,” and
join the ensemble in performing this song en masse.
The Mousewife, composed by Steve Rouse. Based on a book by Rumer Godden, it tells the
story of a little mouse who proves to be different from all the other mice—she has dreams.
When a Dove is brought to the house, the mouse overcomes her fear of his strangeness and
differentness to become good friends with him. The Dove teaches the Mousewife all about
freedom and the outside world. Through a combination of musical and theatrical arts, this story
provides opportunities for emotional growth in the listener and touches on issues of personal
freedoms, self-esteem, self-sacrifice, friendship, separation, and prejudice.
