About
Masquerade Theatre was founded in 1989 after local arts advocates, inspired by a Tennessee Arts Commission meeting at the University of Tennessee at Martin, sought new ways to support and promote the arts in Northwest Tennessee. In 1992, charter board member Mike Dickerson introduced “A Capitol Idea,” a proposal to purchase Union City’s historic Capitol Theatre, which had been vacant since 1991. After a unanimous board vote, Masquerade Theatre officially purchased the building on June 30, 1994, with support from state grant funding, the Tennessee Arts Commission, public donations, and the efforts of Senator Milton Hamilton and Representative Phillip Pinion.
Following years of renovation, Masquerade staged its first production in the restored Capitol Theatre in March 1999 with Guys and Dolls, directed by Johnny McIIwain. Today, the Capitol Theatre is undergoing yet another renovation and large expansion, with plans to reopen in December 2026 and continue serving the community through live performances, arts education, and creative expression.
