Valerie and Andrea Houston are a mother-daughter duo who have been performing togethter for the last 5 years. Together they bring to life the historical mother and daughter team of Madam C.J. Walker and her daughter A’lelia Walker, in the theatrical presentation, “Madam C.J. Walker, the Miracle Hair Grower.”

Valerie Houston has won numerous awards in theater. She was performed professionally for over 30 years. She is a recorded gospel artist as well as a musical theater artist. Ms. Houston has a degree in music and is currently working on completing her doctorate degree.

Andrea Houston has worked as a local artist for over 5 years. She aspires to use the arts to educate todays youth about history and social sciences. She also has an interest in holistic ministry. Andrea Houston is currently being trained in the field of agriculture and herbalogy.

Program Title: Madam C.J. Walker, the Entrepreneur

Program Type: Arts Integration

Program Description:

The program is for students in K-6. Students are exposed to various musical genres of the late 19th and early 20th century. Students will learn about he life and times of America’s first female and African-American millionaire. Madam C.J. Walker, The Miracle Hair Grower is a 45-minute theatrical presentation on the life of America’s” first” female and African-American millionaire, with a 15-minute talk back. Madam C.J. Walker was born in 1867 as Sara Breedlove, in the Delta of Louisiana. She was the first of her family to be born free. At the age of 7, Sara was orphaned, by the death of both of her parents. Sara had to move with her sister and her husband in Vicksburg, Mississippi, where she worked in the cotton fields and cook kitchens. Sara married Moses McWilliams at the age of 14 and became a mother by the age of 18. After five years of marriage Sara’s husband was murdered. After her husband’s murder, Sara left Vicksburg for St. Louis with her daughter A’lelia McWilliams. There in St. Louis Sara, worked many different occupations and encountered many individuals while rebuilding her life.

Program Title: Civil Rights Leading Men and Women

Program Type: Arts Integration

Program Description:

Civil Rights Leading Men and Women is an arts integrated program that exposes children to the discipline of theatre, dance and music. It is a production that allows students within the public school system to now only experience a dynamic debate amongst the best minds of the 19th, 20th and 21st century. Students are allowed to participate and experience different facets of theatre. Students will be mentally stimulated and entertain while Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Maria Stewart, Angela Davis and other past and present civil rights leaders discuss the future of public education in America.
