Program Description:
The Knoxville Museum of Art opened in 1990 in a 53,200 square-foot facility designed by renowned architect Edward Larrabee Barnes. As the museum matured and integrated itself more fully into the life of the community, its collecting and programming evolved to embrace the rich visual culture, old and new, of the Southern Appalachians. Higher Ground: A Century of the Visual Arts in East Tennessee opened in 2008 as the museum’s flagship permanent exhibition, and is now supplemented by other permanent and temporary collection-based exhibitions, all supported by a rich menu of related education programming for children and adults. The KMA has approximately 70,000 visitors annually; outreach programs, many targeted at underserved and economically disadvantaged youth, serve an additional 10,000 each year.
