Program Title: Stinky Writing for Kindergarten and First Grade

Program Type: Arts Appreciation

Program Description:

It is difficult to do anything well on the first attempt. An interactive skit demonstrates that we need to practice to do anything well. Writing can be stinky, especially at first. A skunk puppet brings the writing process alive and helps us to understand that our writing doesn’t have to be perfect the first or second time around. Revision is necessary to make writing less stinky! Debbie Dadey’s published books are used as examples with a short oral reading. Debbie explains what a question is and has a short question and answer session. Teachers are given before and after activities to supplement the author visit experience.

Program Title: A Bad Day

Program Type: Arts Appreciation

Program Description:

Second and Third:

Debbie Dadey captures students’ attention with the story of how a bad day became a best-selling book and how a joke became an unforgettable character. Students are guided through a five-step writing process, while helping create and revise a story. Students are also treated to how illustrators must also revise. Dadey walks students through a brainstorming session to a completed project. She shares where she gets ideas, as well as how she works with a co-author, illustrators, and editors in the traditional publishing process. Time is left for student’s questions. Teachers are given before and after activities to supplement the author visit experience.
