Committed to artistic excellence and programming since 1987, Ballet Tennessee brings distinction to Chattanooga in professionally produced, full length ballets and original classical and contemporary works by resident and guest choreographers; model outreach programs; and national caliber professional track programs. The organization bridges socioeconomic boundaries, reflects the diversity of the community on-stage, and reaches out to all populations through performance, outreach, education, and professional training. The result is a unique regional ballet company composed of both professional and dedicated professional-track students. Alumni are pursuing professional dance careers across the country including Charlotte Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and on Broadway.

Program Title: Inter-Active School Assembly

Program Type: Arts Integration

Program Description:

Inter-Active School Assembly is an engaging, exciting, and diverse dance performance geared for K-12 schools. Ballet Tennessee dancers show through performance how dance communicates ideas, tells a story, or transmits emotion. Students discuss main idea and create titles for one of the dances they see. The program goals are to develop new dance audiences and provide exposure to high quality dance in a variety of classical and contemporary idioms. The program connects to the curriculum, engages students, and demonstrates creative problem solving and the mind-body connections of dance. Free teacher ‘s guides connecting to Common Core State Standards are provided.

Program Title: Artist-in-schools residency—classes

Program Type: Arts Curriculum

Program Description:

Ballet Tennessee faculty are available as resident artists in classrooms to lead dance classes in a variety of styles, including ballet, musical theater, jazz, modern, hip-hop, and choreography. Classes can be tailored for age, ability-level, and students with special needs. Connections are made to the curriculum and to the development of life skills, including developing skills like perseverance, spatial awareness, creative problem solving, and mind-body awareness.

Program Title: Professional Development

Program Description:

How can kinesthetic experiences inform classroom learning? Ballet Tennessee Founding Director Anna Baker-VanCura and faculty will lead teachers through gentle, sequential movements of dance class including warm-up, movement across the floor, and connections between dance and other areas of the curriculum. The learning experience will incorporate dance-specific classroom management techniques, enabling a positive and safe learning environment for all ages and abilities in the moving classroom.
