Memphis Symphony Orchestra (MSO) https://memphissymphony.org
The Memphis Symphony Orchestra exists to enrich lives in their diverse community through exceptional music and dynamic programs. They aim to transform their community through the power of music. The MSO has been involved in the music education of students in the Memphis area for years. They believe that music education is key to success in school and they provide excellent performances by high-caliber professional musicians to enhance the Shelby County School District’s strong music programs.
The MSO’s Tunes and Tales program focuses on combining music with literacy. Begun in libraries, a small ensemble performs music that enhances a story as it is read. After expanding the program to schools in 2015, they have worked with over 10,000 students each year at 40 schools and libraries.

Program Type: Arts Appreciation
Program Description:
The Memphis Symphony Orchestra’s Tunes and Tales program promotes literacy by pairing music with storybooks. This selection, “I Need My Monster,” is the story of a young boy who can’t fall asleep without special help. It was recorded during Covid, but would normally be presented live with a member of a school’s staff reading. During the story, MSO musicians enhance the text by playing excerpts from great musical works. Pictures are shown on a screen.
