Program Type: Arts Curriculum
Program Description:
Architecture provides an introduction to the study of the built environment. Many teachers (actually, many adults) did not have opportunities to learn about this field in all their years of school. No wonder teachers are often reluctant to include architecture and the built environment in the classroom, even though their students love it. The interdisciplinary nature of projects provides real world applications of math, social studies, and visual arts learning. This lesson example is designed for elementary students over five days, but the program has been successfully modified for different aged groups and time requirements. Yes, elementary students through high school students benefit from this popular project after collaborative planning by the teacher with the teaching artist. Project- based built environment programs engage older students. This introduction teaches younger students concepts with simple lessons.
