ELIZABETH DAVIDSON has been a professional actress for forty years performing in all media and is a proud member of all three actors’ unions. She received a performance degree in voice and theatre from the prestigious Indiana University School of Music. She has performed in theaters around the country in genres from musicals to Shakespeare. She has worked extensively in local theaters including the Nashville Repertory Theatre. She has been touring her one woman play, “Harriet Beecher Stowe: A Literary Soldier”, for ten years throughout Tennessee and the nation. She believes, like Ossie Davis, the distinguished artist and humanitarian, that “any form of art is a form of power; it has impact, it can affect change. It can not only move us, it makes us move.” She is a recipient of the Professional Development Support Grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission.

Program Title: Harriet Beecher Stowe: A Literary Soldier

Program Description:

Harriet Beecher Stowe: A Literary Soldier” is a one woman play based on the author’s life, letters and her most famous novel, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”. It blends biographical and historical material with actual scenes from the book perfectly balanced for dramatic presentation. The play will give the students a sense of history and its relevance to their personal lives. It can and should be a catalyst for a discussion on race relations then and now. Finally, it will acquaint them with the life of this extraordinary woman whose courage and compassion helped to shape the history of this nation!

Program Title: Harriet Beecher Stowe: A Literary Soldier, An Elementary Adaptation

Program Type: Arts Appreciation

Program Description:

This program is an adaptation of a one woman play that is based on the life of Harriet Beecher Stowe, the indomitable American author, and her most famous novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. It is appropriate for a younger audience, students eight to twelve. It consists of a fifteen minute introduction about Mrs. Stowe and an explanation of the convention of the play. It is followed by a fifteen minute version of the original play. The total program is approximately thirty minutes in length. A discussion with the actress afterwards is suggested and rewarding but not required

Program Title: Harriet Beecher Stowe: A Literary Soldier (multi-media)

Program Type: Arts Appreciation

Program Description:

This program is an extension of program one and is appropriate for middle school and up. It may include a residency for at least one week in collaboration with the visual arts and computer science teachers. The art projects are created by the students prior to the performance.The technological element includes a Power Point, see Artist Work Sample Harriet Slideshow, which students will present during the performance.

The ultimate goal of the entire project is for students to learn racial reconciliation and to acquaint them with the life of this extraordinary woman whose most famous novel still has an impact on their lives today.
