Dedicated to community engagement, the UTM Percussion Studio provides regular educational clinics and concert opportunities to our community, including the “Roots of Rhythm” presentations, reaching over 6,000 students and community members annually.

Dr. Shane Jones is an Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Percussion Studies at the University of Tennessee at Martin, where he was awarded the Outstanding Jr. Faculty Award in 2019. Shane has studied and performed around the globe, including in Brazil, China, Mexico, Trinidad/Tobago, Puerto Rico, Ghana, and across the United States. He was percussionist on Broadway for 1776 at 54 Below and was percussionist for the off-broadway premier of the Pulitzer prize winning show Next to Normal. Currently, Shane is percussionist, financial manager, and logistical coordinator for Khemia Ensemble, an internationally performing mixed chamber group that has performed and held residencies at venues such as National Sawdust (NYC), University of Michigan, Michigan State University, The National University of Bogota (Columbia), and the National University of Corboda (Argentina).

The UTM Percussion Ensemble has performed internationally at the Universidade Federal (UFBA) in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil, the Universidade Federal (UFPE) and Conservatório Pernambucano de Música in Recife, Brazil, the PercuSonidos International Percussion Festival in Tampico, Mexico, and the Dagara Music Center in Ghana, Africa. The group has also performed at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention as winners of the 2016 World Percussion Competition and regionally, with annual performances at the Discovery Park of America and frequent appearances at the Tennessee Music Educators Conference and Tennessee Day of Percussion.

Program Title: Roots of Rhythm - UT Martin Campus Visit

Program Description:

The UT Martin Percussion Society invites you to visit our campus and view the Roots of Rhythm program as well as take a tour of the University, eat in our dining hall, and set up an optional music education activity with our Director of Music Education. We offer Roots shows on campus in the middle of December and the end of April. These shows are eligible for the TN Arts Commission Grant as well. Please inquire to schedule a show!

Program Cost: $1000+bussing fees and cafeteria cost (if eating at UT Martin)

Program Title: Roots of Rhythm - Tour

Program Type: Arts Appreciation

Program Description:

The Roots of Rhythm tours once per year during the end of September with a goal of bringing our dynamic program to underserved communities. We enjoy presenting to the largest audience possible, including entire schools and even entire counties so lets plan ahead to make this an event to remember! This engaging program has high interest and we have a limited number of tour spots so please inquire early.
