Hattiloo Theatre is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, Black repertory theatre company founded in 2006. Hattiloo highlights plays written by or about African-Americans, ranging from classic American works such as ‘Fences’, by three-time Pulitzer Prize winner, August Wilson, to contemporary plays with poignant social relevance such as ‘Hurt Village’ by native Memphian, Katori Hall. The theatre’s seasons are designed to showcase the complexity and diversity of the Black experience for multicultural audiences. Beyond the stage, Hattiloo invests heavily in programs that educate and engage the community at-large, such as panel discussions and seminars, as well as regularly staging free, live theatre in neighborhoods across the city, and providing free and low-cost youth programing year-round. Hattiloo regularly collaborates with an array of local artists, arts groups, non-profits, civic organizations, and businesses that share an interest in staging performances and operating programs that are meaningful and educational, as well as entertaining. Hattiloo’s mission is to develop a Black theatre that is accessible to, relevant to, and reflective a multicultural community.
