Attic Salt is a not-for-profit theatre company founded in 1998 by a group of artists who had a passion for utilizing theatre as a tool for engaging and educating students. The basis of their performances and in-school residencies is that creativity lives within all of us and we can use it every day to help us become better learners and better people. Executive Director Marci Bernstein has toured the country as a teacher, actor and children’s musician and has nearly twenty years of experience as a teaching artist. Artistic Director, Jeff Catanese has worked with film directors such as Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese and he has directed and performed in dozens of theatre productions. As the leaders of Attic Salt, Marci and Jeff have taught at schools across the country and have co-authored many plays, some of which have been adapted into children’s books by Scholastic. Their educational plays are based on folktales, storytelling and international folklore. Each performance is full of character education lessons such as honesty, respect and courage. Their plays also introduce students to a range of literary concepts and new vocabulary.

In addition to their theatre performances, Attic Salt offers in-school residencies which are customized based on the needs of each school. Attic Salt artists work closely with teachers to incorporate their grade-level academic studies into residencies, thereby integrating creative arts into the curricular learning. Many valuable concepts are explored during residencies including social studies, literary studies, creative writing and public speaking. In-school residencies are best for 3rd through 8th grade, but can be adapted for high school as well. Popular residency programs include Folktale Playwrighting, Poetry and Songwriting and Theatrical Performance. All residencies include methods for evaluating student learning and are designed to build confidence, teamwork and passion for learning.
