Athens Area Council for the Arts has for more than three decades been fulfilling its mission to enrich the quality of life and make a difference for our community by providing opportunities for the expression and appreciation of the arts. Program Title: Nagata Shachu Workshop performance

Program Type: Arts Appreciation

Program Description:

Nagata Shachu, an internationally touring taiko (Japanese drums) ensemble, will present a school performance on September 14, 2015 for up to 800 students from K-6th grades. The instrumentalists will talk about the history of the Japanese folk art, exhibit traditional costumes, provide a “show and tell” of various instruments, and demonstrate how rhythms are learned orally, in addition to their energetic performance.

Program Title: Rock 101! Educational Concert

Program Type: Arts Appreciation

Program Description:

The professional touring musicians in the cast of “Yesterday & Today” will take the audience of up to 800 students from 6th – 12th grade on a tour of Rock n Roll history. Students will go on a musical journey from the 50’s rock and roll of Elvis, Buddy, and Patsy Cline, to the psychedelic 60s of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Janis Joplin. They’ll hit the groove of the 70’s with the Bee Gees, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles and the piano men – Billy and Elton and even dabble in the music of the 80s with the likes of Tom Petty, U2 and more!

Program Title: Poetry Alive!

Program Type: Arts Appreciation

Program Description:

AACA is sponsoring two days of performances by the award-winning poetry performance troupe. Poetry Alive! will perform from their repertoire for 3rd-5th grade students in an assembly performance and at least one small-group follow up workshop at three schools. AACA is coordinating directly with schools in our service area to book the shows on a first-come, first-served basis, with consideration of travel time for the artists. We will also consider other outreach opportunities for which the schools are registered in making final booking decisions.
